Class 19:

Most of those who showed up performed one of the 4 pieces assigned from the Workbook 7.7 assignment. and we talked about how the melodies and harmonization were (or were not) effective. Thos of you who missed this class (WAY too many of you!!!!!!!) missed out on a good discussion that would help you a great deal on the Take Home Quiz.

Is playing a simple melody at the piano in public, with time to practice, so scary that half of you failed to show up????? Seriously, If that's the case you MUST practice your piano.

Chapter 7 Take Home Exam

Assignment: write 3 original melodies using the following 3 forms: (10 points)

         #1) Successive phrases (both ending in Perfect Authentic cadences)

#2) Parallel period

#3) Contrasting period

The following conditions should be met:

·      All 3 melodies should be 8 measures in length.

·      At lest one melody in a Major and one in a Minor key.

·      Your rhythm must make sense and your melody should have a sense of inevitability.

·      Melodies must include a Roman numeral harmonic analysis.

·      You must use the attached manuscript for your melodies. You might want to work it out and then carefully re-copy your melodies and analysis onto the attached manuscript.

·      Melodies MUST be well written and readable. Computer printed versions are welcomed if they follow the layout of the attached manuscript.

·      Use any combination of key and time signature that suits your melody.

The following elements must be included and properly used (according to the rules outlined in the Textbook) in at least one of your melodies:

1)   Melodic sequence

2)   Melodic repetition

3)   Appropriate use of melodic minor scale materials

4)   Scalar passages

5)   Arpeggiated passages

6)   A large leap

Each element should be bracketed and numbered according to the above list

Each melody is worth 25 points
